I was hoping to catch a few small mouth since I haven't done that in a while. Well, when we got to the river I immediately saw that the fishing may not be as I had hoped. The river wasn't very high but because of recent rains it was quite murky. I decided to try for a bit anyhow but quite quickly found that even the bream weren't biting. On my way back to the jeep to grab a snack I saw some Hickory nuts laying on the trail. I picked up a few and then decided I would turn a bad day of fishing into a great day for gathering wild edibles. So for the rest of the day Kayla and I tromped through the forest looking for more nuts, acorns, and wild ginger. It was on our way out that we hit the jackpot, muscadine grapes! We gathered enough to fill my ball cap quite quickly. We continued to find more and more vines and soon had two ball caps, a nalgene bottle, and whatever else we had on us to fill up. We headed home excited to get to cooking with our gathered forage. After giving the dog a bath (which she needed) we spent the rest of the night skinning and de-seeding the grapes for muscadine jam. I would have photos of the process but my hands were busy. I have to say that this morning it was awesome on some whole wheat toast. We still have to crack the nuts and I believe Kayla is going to make acorn tortillas. We're also going to give ginger beer a try, and I plan on using the rest of the grapes to make some wine. It just goes to show that if you know what you are doing you can turn a bad day of fishing into a homemade jar of jam.
Ive been invited to be the guest speaker at two Trout Unlimited chapter monthly meetings. I will be discussing how my passion for ultralight backpacking and fly fishing lead me to Tenkara. I will also be talking about how I view the sport and where I plan to take it. If you're in either of the areas feel free to drop by and say hey. You may already be a TU member or might even decide to join after being around all of us trout bums.
Most of us backpackers are fully aware of wood gas stoves and probably own at least one. Well now that cool little stove that runs on twigs laying around the camp site, and you've been using to make coffee on is going global. If you have been following the recent issues in Africa dealing with the illegal charcoal production, you know its a growing problem and its destroying habitats for many animals most notably Gorillas. The problem is that charcoal is what is used in many of the home cook stoves and fires of the local population. Well the Kenya Stove projects has taken the idea of the wood gas stove and come up with a possible solution to that problem. I don't want to steel too much from the kenyastove site but burning wood most notably mesquite (an invasive species) in these larger stoves could reduce if not eliminate the need to make charcoal. I urge you to check out this site and help out if you can. It sure is nice to see that a piece of gear that backpackers built just to boil some water is about to help people and conserve nature in such a positive way.
Hello Everyone,

Well I'm back from California. It was quite the trip and I went for several reasons. I flew into LAX and my first impression of Los Angeles was that of too many people, too much traffic, and too much city. You can imagine my excitement and relief once I was in the mountains. We hiked up the East fork of the San Gabriel river. There is a lot of history to this small river that flows through a high dessert just North East of L.A. If you pay attention as you hike you will see the evidence of an old road that was built in the thirties which was washed away in a flood only a few years later. If you are willing to take on a ten mile hike you can hike up the canyon to "the bridge to nowhere" which is five miles from the nearest road now. There are several other signs that this remote area was once much more populated than today. The main goal for our hike was to do some prospecting. This area has a rich history of producing gold that goes all the way back to the Native Americans who settled there. The other reason for going was to do a little fly fishing or I should say Tenkara. There are native wild rainbows which are the descendants of the steel head that used to run all the way up the river before dams were built down stream. The area is truly rich with trout and I spent every morning before the sun and anyone else was up, walking the river casting dry flies to these little gems. Well Ive attached a video and some photos. I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I did taking them.
Hey Everyone,

This piece of gear happens to be the Sea to Summit Tarp-Poncho in ultra-sil. It's actually a pretty cool item to have in your kit. It's very small and pretty light weighing in at 12 ounces. Although I don't use it on backpacking trips, I do take it with me when I hike into remote native trout streams as an emergency shelter and, well, poncho. I figure that if I have to stay the night in the mountains (and I'm not backpacking of course) its because I have somehow gotten injured (If was lost I could just fallow the stream back). So with that said I most likely will not want to or be able to gather materials for a shelter. Also if I get caught in a rain storm, which I'm sure we all have at some time, I have a poncho to at least hike out in. I pair this up with a SOL Bivvy which is a high end space blanket and a small kit with a whistle, fire starting supplies, a few bandages, and some cord for a nice little survival kit (yes there is always a knife in my pocket or pack). I have added lengths of cord to the four corners for tie downs and have looped them on for easy removal for poncho mode or reconfiguring how I want to set it up. Its simple yet effective and good insurance to have if you ever have to stay the night in the woods. Heck I may even take it on a mild weather backpacking trip just to see what its like.

Ive had this video on my camera for a little while now. I was small mouth bass fishing on the fly one day and had seen several otters along the river. I decided to sit on a log and watch one for a while. I had no idea what was about to happen. I wont spoil the video but I will say its one of the coolest things that has happened to me in the outdoors.

I know its been quite some time since Ive posted anything. The truth is that even though I haven't been active on here I have actually been quite active. I just wanted to let you guys know that I'm back and should be posting regularly again. As soon as I figure out this video editing soft wear on this mac I'll be putting up some really cool videos as well. Ive been doing just about everything you can think of from gold prospecting, steel head fishing, hiking, and even catching carp on the fly. Ive caught my biggest bass ever, which happened to be on a 4wt fly rod! Ive also started a personal quest of catching 25 species of fish all on a fly rod. Of course the most interesting thing Ive been up to is watching my daughter get bigger, smarter, and much faster than I remember. Personal note: a three year old, brownies, and nature museums can be an interesting mix and a great workout. Well, I don't want to get too long winded so Ive posted a few photos for you to check out. keep checking back for updates on future fishing trips and even the status on the "25 on a fly" quest.

See you on the trail,

Hey Everyone.

Well Its been either hot or raining, with nothing in between. Since I don't like to hike in ninety five degree weather and the trout fishing isn't usually the best this time of year I have found a few ways to spend my summer days. I have recently taken up the hobby of gold prospecting and found that standing waist deep in a river shoveling dirt is a great way to spend a hot day. Ive been doing a little fly fishing for bass as well. Catching a small mouth bass on a four weight fly rod can be quite a challenge and a thrill, though I catch mostly small bream. This is great practice for the fall though. One of my favorite things Ive been doing is spending time with my daughter. Taking her to a museum is a great way to get out of the heat and it also gives me a chance to be dad and teach her about bugs, birds, fish, and anything else that she my ask about. Her favorite thing to say is "I want to touch it" even if its a diamond back rattle snake. I did let her pet a corn snake though. I hope you all have found a way to beat the heat and have some fun. I just keep telling myself fall is just around the corner.

I'm excited to see that some new waters have been added to the delayed harvest list. Here is the list of new spots to check out this fall.

Jackson county- Tuckasegee river (downstream N.C. 107 bridge to the falls 275 yards upstream of the U.S. 23-441 bridge).

Madison county- spring creek (N.C. 209 bridge at Hot Springs city limits to iron bridge at the end of Andrews ave).

Surry county- Arrat River (103 bridge to U.S. 52 bridge).

Watauga county- Coffee Lake.

Wilkes county- Elk Creek (portion on Leatherwood Mountains Development).

I myself have planned to take a week this October and fish as many rivers, creeks, and streams as I can. I should have a great post after that. Ill also be in N.Y. in Sept. and will probably find my way to the river for some fall run steelies or maybe even a salmon. Ive been busy with...well just about everything. Im helping a friend plan her ten day trip into the San Gabriel Mountains to go prospecting for a week (another thing that I have started to play with). In doing so we have been diligently goving over the meal planning. I have recently found out about some realy great sites to get the little things that you may need to have an enjoyable meal outdoors. I have put them in the "sites I visit" section of the site. One of my favorites is Just Tomatoes. I hope you all have had some time to get outside this summer. I know of quite a few folks that have some great paddling trips planned and I am pumped to hit the (bartram) trail this fall. Well I guess that's about it for now check out the new links and make some great meals.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 170px; height: 170px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFRRmwINmzeQSHkJaFJH53tyNI4TJvoyC_bTiFds9G5U2GtyFIK4XaTULqXt7bBcKfx_dSq6LKKmLGzk3-MLN8856HlIjF8Cir59uASNHmrp62RBDBD-yI3lxNZ5HH-oP9APGMruHXS4ih/s320/tomatoes.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5615325604358545794" />
See you on the trail,
Lance

p.s. Hey Everyone,

I had been given a few days off for the holidays as expected. However, I realised that I only had plans for Christmas eve, which was to see my daughter. I soon came to the conclusion that I had no plans for the other few days. Well, it didn't take more than a second for my mind to wander to the stream. So that's what I did I drove to the river to spend a couple days with a fly rod in my hand. Besides, I knew that I would have the river to myself since I figured everyone else would be home eating turkey and playing with their new toys. It was a great couple of days. I'm not going to say it wasn't cold but the fishing was fantastic! Believe it or not but the trout were actually rising to my dry on the dropper. I took to time to shoot a few short clips and here they are.
With the Holidays here, it means long days at work. The weather hasn't helped much either. I was supposed to be up on one of the rivers today, but decided against it because of the freezing rain and ice we are experiencing. I mean I love fly fishing, but I'm not opposed to a nice hot cup of coffee and a movie on the couch. A friend of mine, who is also a fly fishing guide, and I are trying to get up on the water together between Christmas and New Years. As far as hiking goes, I get the feeling that we are going to have quite the winter here in NC, I may get out for a good snowy day hike but I'm pretty sure there will be no backpacking until spring. I am however checking out some new gear and working on a couple of projects. I also may have a really cool announcement to make in the near future.
I hope everyone is having a good holiday season. I hope we all get that cool new piece of gear we wanted. Maybe we can have a blogger show and tell. Happy holidays everyone. Stay warm.

See you on the trail,
LanceLance Milkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13230104803414566724noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8302909969634967107.post-91495486997633533552010-11-12T12:21:00.006-05:002012-05-21T08:30:03.697-04:00Big Brown
Hey Everyone,

I was up on the river a few days ago and had yet another wonderful day. The weather was actually pretty warm and the sun was out. I didn't expect such a banner day since it wasn't overcast and certainly didn't expect what I was about to catch. I had landed several trout that day and was just moving along the overhangs drifting small nymphs when out of no where a huge brown slammed my fly. This fish was 24 inches and all of five to five and a half pounds. I'm pretty sure I'll be looked at like I'm crazy for even attempting to film this fish but that's what I did. I don't want to take away from the video that I risked so much to shoot so here it is.

Needless to say it was a real caper on what was a great day on the water. I had the strangest thing happen to me as well. I was standing there casting away and all of the sudden something hit my boot. I looked down and to my amazement there was a brook trout just resting between my feet. Now I'm a very still person and sometimes don't move my feet for hours while fishing. So with that said I had a fishing buddy for about forty five minutes which I thought was pretty cool. Check out the photo I took of my good friend. I talked to several guys on the water that day and even handed out a few pointers here and there since I apparently had the magic touch for the day. I cant wait to get back up on the water and try and beat my own record.
I cant even tell you how good of a day it was. I was landing a fish every second or third cast all day long. I even managed to catch not one but two browns one of which was a nice fifteen incher. I began moving around the stream to check on other holes and was having the same success in each. I then noticed three ladies fishing up stream of me. When one of them came walking up I waved her over. I asked her how they had been doing and found that they had had limited success. Well at that note, I not only gave up the spot I was at, I told her how to rig, what flies to use, and where in that hole to cast. Her third cast produced a nice rainbow. She then began pulling them in with regularity. I proceeded up stream to her two friends and did the same. One of the women hooked a very large, very pretty, brook trout that I netted for her. I must have spent at least two hours just talking to and watching them fish. It was as much fun watching them as it was landing them myself. The ladies where very thankful for the the advise and time spent with them. It was possibly the best day on the river I have had not only because of my success but because I was able to help others do the same.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGZc5IEwm6jQXrEGv1xg4rANgBHN52IrtlJdkkhspDgNb0IOg6i8Msvbl984XyrgP_jDQS25La6qlxSvDd9c2fdUeqV8q-5cYJmWaCtKiBwheZwPRkrDc1UykcdQoQmoTNfolvHrej5zE-/s320/10-5-10+019.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5524948983185767890" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixkxjoMFuRUc5d8myZCNvk33xr-iAuLg7ZwUPJf49XlYtsmyRwBF84hoORS2r6-LxJNGGksMkuQMecUwU0QC3ecX-QgQgvBeNncI5nT-4lJqx-HEh01hFmu5RbJ5Kzqs7BAIwnLb5u0pFG/s320/10-5-10+017.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5524949686231720626" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIUozxk6Ypl-Ja-3dXSQHXQ68qAxw0vNnjy6FUhAVTkpaDhtbkT92h8DQAirgkcdc4yvivQkcHb2mhtt5xwVM7iXQ1IHRZqCc2uGnaiTkAZ7lHLLrNplEUHq3mYjWc9HT9zPb38ODqreQs/s320/10-5-10+028.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5524950190554541746" />
See you on the trail,
LanceLance Milkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13230104803414566724noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8302909969634967107.post-33189839047971224202010-10-04T20:04:00.003-04:002010-10-04T20:43:11.473-04:00Trail NoteHey Everyone,

I was recently informed of a really cool site that could save your life. I'm not sure about you but I usually hike alone. With hiking solo there are inherit risks that one must accept. I'm a compulsive trip planner, taking up to a year to plan out the details of a hike. However, with all the planning in the world you cannot account for a misstep or accident. What would happen if you fell while in a deep ravine and could not move to get a cell or GPS signal. For those occasions there's Trail Note . A Trail Note is a simple online form that stores your travel details. You name the trip, provide a travel description, give a start time and end time of the trip, and mark your destination on a digital map. You also enter the email or text message address of people you would like to notify in case of you do not return in time. This is a really great free service. If you do any kind of back country exploring like backpacking, fly fishing, or ATVs I suggest you check out an possibly use this site. I plan on registering and using trail note for all of my future back country trips.

See you on the trail,
LanceLance Milkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13230104803414566724noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8302909969634967107.post-2060501445420485912010-09-11T09:14:00.004-04:002010-09-25T09:19:42.212-04:00Back in the LightHey everyone,

Im sure you all have been wondering where I have been.(yeah right) I have pretty much been working and sleeping. Last fall I took him trout fishing for the first time and he finished the day with a slam. He just picked up a nice fly rod and was itching to get it on the water. We took off for a very commonly fished stream in hopes of finding a few stragglers. I turned out to be a great day on the water and josh hooked his first trout on a fly. We also caught some species that I wasn't expecting but they were pretty all the same. I personally cant wait for fall to get here so I can really put him on the fish. Its nice to get someone else excited about a sport that you are passionate about. Here are a few photos of our day.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQpli1UyP1ORNECImSmiD6_2jtFf4qGbJ9J5Yo3-dpml74mI_VkHHSIKsZF48NHi6kPZkgFegZq8NnToq1T8Ek65aP17SOHfqArb8qUgUICRDDF9mxzAeM2_IOIoj0NxRT2LlnGP50F_qQ/s320/DSC03502.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503042947860593858" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjPA2llGllsqH-l5ZdBOZ0jihLz_y9Fruc0aqn3nVbCFwOUCX1iFcPy6cMS8MFIKL0AgIkVjeQOPJmnXMXRDSYklnWDdi0hf9QD3fNWcrLEMLFUFddVeduqHP7Cc4p3wNOssWll7mb4VMB/s320/DSC03504.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503043768485072514" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaDC-pzBYdQ5L8IL_Ee9Xdz4JbKOPrGaHebVTAL9T8M4CP2dfyEgrAI8yquICXPuasVPzsIl4HGupQddcnlYHyPdg_l6_hF88fvGSunbQr4Usy5GJZKuLJRQtN3DS3soBfpDRmsonDhuKX/s320/DSC03505.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503044998456576242" />
I hope every one's summer is going well and that you have found time to get out.

See you on the trail,
LanceLance Milkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13230104803414566724noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8302909969634967107.post-82602456063214998502010-07-25T22:45:00.006-04:002010-07-25T23:57:19.514-04:00EbiraI spent my Friday in the backcountry, on a small trout stream, Tenkara fishing. I was also testing out a new product, the Ebira. All I can say is this thing is awsome! I consider it a must have for the backcountry Tenkara fly fisherman.

If you want to know more about the Ebira or Tenkara. I planned a nice eight mile hike using a combination of trails, and enjoyed hiking from one high point to the next. However, upon reaching my final summit, I heard the unmistakable sound of aluminium hitting a tree branch. Imagine my surprise when a nearly half full Miller Lite can landed with a thud at my feet! I was, for lack of a better term, pissed. I grabbed the can, emptied the remaining contents, and decided to hike it back to the top in hopes of returning it to its owner! Well, it was no surprise that upon reaching the top, and questioning about ten people, no one saw anything. I'm pretty sure I found the guy (who shied away from me as I inquired about the can), but with no proof or pointed finger, I couldn't justify handing it to him. I crushed the can and hiked it back to the parking lot. In all my years of hiking, I've been through all types of weather, but this was the first time it rained beer on me.

See you on the trail,
LanceLance Milkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13230104803414566724noreply@blogger.com1
